Volunteering

The UK Workforce Hub has developed National Occupational Standards (NOS) for volunteer managers. These were published in August 2008 and can be downloaded by going to the UK Workforce Hub website and following the links to National Occupational Standards.

They are aimed primarily at volunteer managers in the voluntary and community sector. However they may also be of interest to volunteer managers in the statutory sector.

The Commission on the Future of Volunteering was created following the Year of the Volunteer in 2005. Its aim is to develop a long term vision for volunteering in England. It called for evidence on a range of volunteering issues early in 2007. NAAN made a submission and encouraged our members and their volunteers to make their own submissions as well. A report  Manifesto for Change was published in January 2008. It can be downloaded from the Commission website.

Members can download NAAN's submission on the Consultations page in the member-only section of the website.

INVESTING IN VOLUNTEERS is the UK quality standard for all organisations which involve volunteers in their work. The Standard enables organisations to comprehensively review their volunteer management, and also publicly demonstrates their commitment to volunteering. The scheme was launched in October 2004. Several NAAN members have already achieved the Standard. Others may wish to consider it. For further information on the process, costs and other details go to investing in volunteers

Organisations using volunteers may want to consider the Compact Code of Good Practice on Volunteering. A Summary is available here, or the whole document and other related items can be found on the Compact website.

If you would like to volunteer as an Appropriate Adult please email us giving your name and contact details and an indication of the geographical area you would like to volunteer in, and we will pass on your details to the scheme nearest to you. Alternatively contact your local volunteer centre.
