NAAN Development Project

The Development Project was a two year initiative, through which NAAN aimed to support our members in a number of ways. These include more regional meetings, training days, workshops and help with the development of appropriate adult schemes in line with NAAN’s National Standards. The development officer also worked with commissioners of appropriate adult schemes, promoting the development of schemes that are accountable and measured against NAAN’s National Standards. The project was established in July 2009 and finished at the end of June 2011.

The main aims of the Development Project were:

  • To provide our members with support and assistance in achieving the NAAN National standards and assessing their schemes against these.
  • To provide information pertaining to good practice in the recruitment, supervision and retention of appropriate adults.
  • To support the development of regional or sub regional groups as they are needed.
  • To assist with the development of schemes and budgets, providing advice in negotiating with funders / commissioners.

We also worked with the Home Office and Department of Health, responding to the key deliverables relating to appropriate adult work as identified in the Improving Health, Supporting Justice Plan which was the last Government's response to the Bradley Report. The main aims for this work were:

  • To work with commissioners and develop appropriate adult services in line with National Standards.
  • To review and map appropriate adult services in England and Wales.
  • To increase awareness of issues affecting Appropriate Adult Schemes and improving the skills of scheme co-ordinators through workshops and training.
  • To increase awareness of appropriate adult issues in a wider context through increased partnership working.

The project was accessible to NAAN members and potential commissioning bodies. We provided information and advice on the role and responsibilities of appropriate adults, support and guidance in analysing the need for and establishing new schemes, issues concerning best practice and the management and support of appropriate adults.

We provided and developed a wide range of templates and tools supporting co-ordinators and commissioners in developing, planning and delivering effective and accountable schemes. These include Project Development Templates, Budget Calculators and model policy documents, forms etc.
